Publish your documentation

Understand drafts, page publication, and site publication, then make documentation available to readers.

Documentello separates saved drafts from published content. It also keeps page publication separate from site publication.

How publication works

  • Saving a draft stores editor changes without affecting readers.
  • Publishing a page makes its current draft the published version.
  • Publishing the site makes published pages available to visitors.

A published page is still unavailable while the whole site is unpublished. Publishing the site does not automatically publish draft pages.

Publish one page

  1. Open the page.
  2. Wait until its draft is saved.
  3. Select Publish.

The first publication creates the public page. Later publications replace the public version while preserving earlier published versions in the page's history.

Publish several changes

When the site has unpublished page changes, select Publish changes beneath the page tree. Review the number of affected pages, then confirm. Required unpublished parent pages are included automatically.

Publish the site

Only the owner can publish the whole site.

  1. Open Site settings.
  2. Find Publishing.
  3. Select Publish site.

Readers can now visit published pages at the site's Documentello address or connected custom domain.

Unpublish content

You can unpublish an individual page from its page options, or unpublish the entire site under Site settings. Unpublishing the site preserves content and settings so it can be published again later.
