Use a custom domain

Connect and verify your own documentation domain or change the included Documentello address.

Every site includes a documentello.site address. Owners can also connect a custom hostname such as docs.example.com.

Connect a domain

  1. Open Domains.
  2. Under Custom domain, select Connect domain.
  3. Enter the hostname without https:// or a path.
  4. Select Connect domain.
  5. Add the displayed CNAME record at your DNS provider.
  6. Keep the CNAME in place after the domain becomes active.

Some DNS providers want only the part before your domain in the Name field. Use the exact value Documentello shows for the CNAME target.

DNS changes can take time. Documentello checks automatically while the Domains page is open, and you can also select Check status.

When the custom domain is active, the Documentello address redirects to it.

Replace or remove a domain

Replacing a custom domain disconnects the old one immediately. The included Documentello address stays available while the new domain is being configured.

Removing the custom domain makes the site use its Documentello address again. Links that use the removed hostname stop working.

Change the Documentello address

Under Documentello address, select Change. Subdomains use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens.

You can change the subdomain once every 30 days. The previous address remains reserved for 12 months and redirects to the new address during that period.
